Single-beat estimation of the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship in patients with heart failure
Conclusions
Single-beat EDPVRs obtained from hearts spanning a wide range of sizes and conditions accurately predicted directly measured EDPVRs with low RMSE. Single-beat EDPVR indices correlated well with directly measured values, but systematic biases were present at low and high pressures. The single-beat method facilitates less invasive EDPVR estimation, particularly when coupled with emerging non-invasive techniques to measure pressures and volumes. (Source: Heart)...

Hemodynamic Advantages of Right Heart Decompression during Off-Pump Surgery [ORIGINAL ARTICLE]
Cardiac maneuvering during off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery can compress the right ventricle, causing temporary dysfunction and hemodynamic instability. The hemodynamic impact of a decompression technique comprising right pleurotomy and pericardial release was investigated during cardiac elevation. Intraoperative continuous real-time monitoring of cardiac index and stroke volume index was carried out using the PulseCO system in 12 consecutive patients with normal ventricular function who underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass by a single surgeon. A pulmonary artery catheter was used to monitor pulmonary artery pressure and systemic venous O2 saturation. Hemodynamic changes during vertical displacement of the heart were measured before and after performing a right pleurotomy and p......

Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in Severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction [ORIGINAL ARTICLE]
Our aim was to examine hospital outcomes of coronary artery bypass surgery in patients with and without left ventricular dysfunction, with regard to the surgical technique (off- or on-pump). Between March 2007 and March 2008, 689 consecutive patients underwent isolated first-time coronary artery bypass; 127 had ejection fractions ≤30% (group 1) and 562 had ejection fractions >30% (group 2). Data of preoperative risk profiles and hospital outcomes were collected prospectively. Off-pump operations were performed in 49 (38.6%) patients in group 1 and 196 (34.9%) in group 2. The incidences of infectious, neurologic, and cardiac complications postoperatively were significantly higher in group 1. In multivariate analysis, preoperative ejection fraction ≤30% was found to be an independen......

Protecting the brain from gaseous and solid micro-emboli during coronary artery bypass grafting: a randomized controlled trial
Conclusion
Gaseous micro-embolization contributes to neuropsychological decline, which is measurable 3 months post-operatively. No filter device could protect the brain during CABG completely. However, the use of the DBT tends to improve the cognitive outcome after CABG. Gas filters are recommendable for neuroprotection during cardiac surgery. (Source: European Heart Journal)...

The right ventricular annular velocity reduction caused by coronary artery bypass graft surgery occurs at the moment of pericardial incision
Conclusions: Minute-by-minute monitoring during cardiac surgery reveals that, virtually, all the losses in RV systolic velocity occurs within the first 3 minutes after pericardial incision. Right ventricular long-axis reduction during coronary bypass surgery results not from cardiopulmonary bypass but rather from pericardial incision. (Source: American Heart Journal)...

Correction
Conclusions section of the Abstract. The last sentence should be corrected as follows: “The substantial variations in the management of post-CABG AF across sites are likely because of LACK OF definitive data on the most effective therapies, highlighting the need for clinical trials on rate versus rhythm control and on anticoagulation for AF in this setting.” We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused. Spontaneous healing of spontaneous coronary artery dissection.
We report a case of SCAD in a young female free of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, who presented six hours after thrombolysis for ST elevation myocardial infarction. Coronary angiography showed a dissection of the left anterior descending and immediate branch. She had successful coronary artery bypass grafting, with complete healing of left anterior descending dissection.

c-Jun Regulates Shear- and Injury-inducible Egr-1 Expression, Vein Graft Stenosis after Autologous End-to-Side Transplantation in Rabbits, and Intimal Hyperplasia in Human Saphenous Veins [Molecular Basis Of Cell and Developmental Biology]
Coronary artery bypass graft failure represents an unsolved problem in interventional cardiology and heart surgery. Late occlusion of autologous saphenous vein bypass grafts is a consequence of neointima formation underpinned by smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration and proliferation. Poor long term patency and the lack of pharmacologic agents that prevent graft failure necessitate effective alternative therapies. Our objective here was to evaluate the effect of targeted inhibition of the bZIP transcription factor c-Jun on intimal hyperplasia in human saphenous veins and vein graft stenosis after autologous end-to-side transplantation. DNAzymes targeting c-Jun attenuated intimal hyperplasia in human saphenous vein explants. Adenovirus-forced c-Jun expression stimulated SMC proliferation, prol......

Selective right ventricular impairment following coronary artery bypass graft surgery [Original articles]
Conclusions: Both prospectively and cross-sectionally, there is evidence of substantial, selective right ventricular impairment following CABG. These features cannot be explained simply by some general feature of ischaemia and, therefore, must be a consequence of surgery. (Source: European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)...

The prognostic value of troponin release after adult cardiac surgery -- a meta-analysis [Reviews]
In conclusion, this meta-analysis provides evidence for an association between postoperative Tn release with mid- and short-term all-cause mortality after adult cardiac surgery. However, differences in populations, timing of Tn testing, Tn subunit and Tn assays make definitive conclusions about effect size and cut-off values difficult. Cardiac Procedures among American Indians and Alaska Natives compared to Non-Hispanic Whites Hospitalized with Ischemic Heart Disease in California
Conclusion AIAN were not less likely to receive cardiac procedures as non-Hispanic whites during hospitalizations for ischemic heart
disease. Additional research is needed to determine whether differences in specialty referral patterns, patients’ treatment
preferences, or outpatient management may explain some of the health disparities due to cardiovascular disease that is found
among AIAN.
