Study Suggests That Staggered Radiologist Work Shifts Improve Patient Care
Implementation of staggered radiologist work shifts can expedite the communication of urgent findings and improve patient care, according to a study in the September issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Radiology practice in the United States is moving toward 24/7 coverage, in which it has maximized coverage for imaging such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation either by utilizing on-call radiologists with their groups or teleradiology services... A More Aggressive Approach to Emergency Embolectomy for Acute Pulmonary Embolism
CONCLUSION: The results of emergent APE are encouraging, particularly among patients without cardiopulmonary arrest. It should not be reserved for patients in extremis; rather, it should be considered for patients with right ventricular dysfunction that is an early sign of impending hemodynamic collapse. Abusive Head Trauma: Judicial Admissions Highlight Violent and Repetitive Shaking
CONCLUSIONS: This unique forensic case series confirms the violence of shaking. The high frequency of habitual AHT is a strong argument for reporting suspected cases to judicial authorities and helps to explain the difficulty in dating the injuries. (Source: PEDIATRICS)... MORE...

A method for standardized computed tomography angiography-based measurement of aortic valvar structures
Conclusion This method showed a high degree of inter-rater reliability and absolute agreement for AVAp diameters. Agreement was lower for AA–LV angle and distance to coronary artery measurements, emphasizing the need for software improvements and standardized image acquisition protocols. Distal pancreatectomy: another indication for prophylactic pancreatic stenting?
Distal pancreatectomy (DP), the removal of the left portion of the pancreas, is less frequently performed than pancreatic head resection. It is mostly done to resect rare pancreatic tumors and, less frequently, to treat complicated chronic pancreatitis. After DP, the whole bile duct and the cephalic portion of the main pancreatic duct remain unaffected so that the pancreatic remnant is usually simply closed (by hand sewing or by using a stapler) with a percutaneous drain left close to the transected pancreas. A pancreaticojejunostomy is performed in a minority of cases. Both DP and pancreatic head resection currently carry an acceptable mortality rate in high-volume centers, but morbidity remains extremely high. Pancreatic fistula is the most frequent serious complication after DP, with an...... MORE...

Measurement of Thoracic Bone Mineral Density with Quantitative CT [Musculoskeletal Imaging]
Conclusion: There was a significant association between the mean thoracic and lumbar BMDs. Therefore, standard derived measurements (young-subgroup BMD ± standard deviation) based on these data can be used with thoracic CT images to estimate the bone mineral status. © RSNA, 2010 (Source: Continuous Publishing articles)... In vivo evidence for long-term CNS toxicity, associated with chronic binge use of methamphetamine
Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to examine disturbances in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) associated with methamphetamine abuse. Methods: Using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), rCBF was measured in 20 men who had previously injected methamphetamine intravenously for over 30 months and who were now abstinent for a minimum of 9 months and for an average of 2 years. Values were compared with those in 12 healthy men who had never injected methamphetamine. Results: While rCBF was significantly and disproportionately reduced in subcortical and dorsal cortical brain regions, including the striatum, thalamus, cingulum, mesiodorsal prefrontal cortex, and pons (all t's>8.3 after global normalization, corrected p's (Source: Drug and Alcohol Dependence)... Patient-Specific Modeling and Quantification of the Aortic and Mitral Valves From 4-D Cardiac CT and TEE
As decisions in cardiology increasingly rely on noninvasive methods, fast and precise image processing tools have become a crucial component of the analysis workflow. To the best of our knowledge, we propose the first automatic system for patient-specific modeling and quantification of the left heart valves, which operates on cardiac computed tomography (CT) and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) data. Robust algorithms, based on recent advances in discriminative learning, are used to estimate patient-specific parameters from sequences of volumes covering an entire cardiac cycle. A novel physiological model of the aortic and mitral valves is introduced, which captures complex morphologic, dynamic, and pathologic variations. This holistic representation is hierarchically defined on three ...... MORE...

Roughly One In Six Cancer Survivors Forgo Some Medical Care Due To Cost, Study Finds
AARP Bulletin: "Two years after undergoing a double mastectomy and chemotherapy so severe she was hospitalized in intensive care for several weeks, breast cancer survivor Denise Hicks should be following what her doctors call 'the plan,'" which includes additional medications and treatments. But she can't. "Hicks has health insurance but already reached her coverage limits. So the CT scan that her oncologist 'strongly advised" months ago to check a possible recurrence remains undone. ... She's also skipping recommended medications. ... Hick's disquieting predicament is not unique... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)... MORE...
