Association Between Joint Hypermobility Syndrome and Panic Disorder: A Case-Control Study [ORIGINAL RESEARCH REPORTS]
CONCLUSION: The strong association between JHS and panic disorder points to a genetic association. There is also a possibility that JHS and mitral valve prolapse, another condition frequently associated with panic disorder, share a common pathophysiological mechanism. (Source: Psychosomatics)...

[Cognitive impairment in patients suffering from fibromyalgia : An underestimated problem.]
Authors: Schmidt-Wilcke T, Wood P, Lürding R
The primary symptom of fibromyalgia (FM) is chronic, widespread pain accompanied by diffuse tenderness to light palpation. However, many patients report a multitude of additional complaints and symptoms. Besides fatigue, exhaustibility and stiffness, a decrease in concentration and memory are further complaints that add significantly to the degree of suffering. This complaint, often termed "fibrofog", is increasingly recognised as an independent symptom that has made its way into the medical literature under the term "dyscognition". Nonetheless there are only a few studies that have specifically investigated neuropsychological deficits in FM patients in order to further specify clinical complaints. The studies performed so far have prov......

Benefit Termination Was Reasonably Supported By Evidence, Judge Finds
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - An ERISA-governed disability insurer that terminated benefits to a claimant with back pain and fibromyalgia did not act arbitrarily, a federal judge in Alabama ruled Jan. 4, finding that the insurer's decision was reasonably supported by the evidence (Sharon McCormick v. The Fresenuis Medical Care North America Short & Long Term Disability Plan, No. 08-927, M.D. Ala.; 2010 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 56).

Effects of Milnacipran on Cardiac Repolarization in Healthy Participants.
Authors: Periclou A, Palmer RH, Zheng H, Lindamood C
Milnacipran is approved for management of fibromyalgia in the United States. In this double-blind, placebo-and active drug-controlled study (N = 100), effects of supratherapeutic doses of milnacipran on cardiac repolarization were evaluated in healthy volunteers. The primary outcome was the largest mean difference between milnacipran and placebo in time-matched baseline-adjusted QT interval corrected for heart rate using an individual correction formula (QTcNi). In addition, data were analyzed using the Fridericia formula (QTcF) and a post hoc piecewise QTcNi analysis based on a dichotomous cut of RR interval data at 800 ms. Moxifloxacin (400 mg single dose) was used to establish assay sensitivity. Using the QTcNi method, the largest......

A systematic review of homoeopathy for the treatment of fibromyalgia
Abstract Homoeopathy is often advocated for fibromyalgia (FM) and many FM patients use it. To critically evaluate all randomised clinical
trials (RCTs) of homoeopathy as a treatment for FM, six electronic databases were searched to identify all relevant studies.
Data extraction and the assessment of the methodological quality of all included studies were done by two independent reviewers.
Four RCTs were found, including two feasibility studies. Three studies were placebo-controlled. None of the trials was without
serious flaws. Invariably, their results suggested that homoeopathy was better than the control interventions in alleviating
the symptoms of FM. Independent replications are missing. Even though all RCTs suggested results that favour homoeopathy,
important caveats......

Serum hyaluronic acid levels do not explain morning stiffness in patients with fibromyalgia
Abstract To investigate the serum levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) in Korean female patients with fibromyalgia (FM) and correlate these
levels with variables of disease severity including morning stiffness, we measured HA serum levels in 69 FM patients, 72 rheumatoid
arthritis (RA) patients, and 71 healthy controls by enzyme-linked binding protein assay. The serum levels of HA in FM patients
did not differ from those in the age-matched controls, whereas HA levels were significantly higher in RA patients than in
FM patients and controls (both Pā<ā0.001). With a cut-off value of 75 ng/mL, the prevalence of seropositivity was higher in RA patients (59.7%) than in FM
patients (26.1%) or controls (14.1%; both Pā<ā0.001). There were no differences in seropositivi......

Slow Breathing Reduces Pain
Research performed by a scientist at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center has shown that controlled breathing at a slowed rate can significantly reduce feelings of pain. Chronic pain sufferers, specifically fibromyalgia (FM) patients, also reported less pain while breathing slowly, unless they were overwhelmed by negative feelings, sadness or depression. The research was led by Arthur (Bud) Craig, PhD, at Barrow, and was done in collaboration with investigators in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University... Patient-initiated online support groups: motives for initiation, extent of success and success factors
We studied the success and success factors of online support groups (OSGs) for patients, and the motives and goals of people who start such groups. We interviewed 23 webmasters of OSGs for patients with breast cancer, fibromyalgia and arthritis. The majority were women (n = 20) and most were patients (n = 21). Analysis of the interviews revealed that webmasters had altruistic and intrinsic motives for initiating an online support group. They defined success as the fulfilment of the goals they had in mind when they initiated their groups. To be able to make a group successful, decisions about its organization and management need to be coherent with these goals. Most webmasters stressed that promoting the group, keeping it alive and moderating the messages were vital success factors during t......
